Ashantigold Ashanti has confirmed its intention to offload its interest in AshantiGold Football Club.
A statement issued by the Board of Directors in Accra yesterday revealed that discussions were currently underway and in due course an announcement would be made in respect of the future direction of the club.
The Graphic Sports published in its August 22 edition that AngloGold Ashanti, the current owners of AshantiGold FC, had begun moves to put the club on sale.
Consequently, some prospective buyers including former CEO of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Mr Herbert Mensah have inspected facilities of the club at the Len Clay Stadium.
According to the statement, the decision to review the current direction of the club was taken some time ago and the ongoing review of the ownership structure will focus on the objective of ensuring that Ashgold F/C is taken through modern football management practice.
It assured its social business partners and interested parties in Obuasi that the traditional relevance and contribution of Ashgold F/C would be protected.
“We can state categorically that the club will not be relocated from its base at Obuasi.
“Neither will its name be changed, AngloGold Ashanti believes that ultimately the club should not be just an attachment of its mining operations but should be a professionally managed independent football club with a commitment to excellence,” it noted.
