BBC AFRICAN Footballer of the Year, Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo and Arsenal donated an undisclosed amount of money to the Otumfuo Education Fund at a short ceremony at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi last Thursday.

The commendable gesture on the part of the lanky striker was aimed at helping the Asantehene to realize his dream of making education accessible to every child of school going age in the country.

Briefing the press after the donation, Adebayor heaped praises on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his vision of setting up the fund, and called on well-endowed persons and organizations to donate to the fund.

The Arsenal hitman argued that education was the surest way to ensure prosperity in life. He thus called on parents to invest in the education of their children.

“The best legacy that one could bequeath his children in this computer age is by giving him or her the best of education,” he contended.

The Togolese star player's visit to the Garden City forms part of his three-city African tour aimed at advising the youth of Africa about the importance of education, especially when combined with sports.

Originally, Adebayor was expected to visit Kumasi on Wednesday but due to flight problems the visit was postponed to Thursday.

Hundreds of soccer fans that converged on the Prempeh Assembly Hall on Wednesday to catch a glimpse of the BBC African Best Footballer of the Year left the place dejected.

Earlier in the day, Adebayor while addressing a youth seminar at the Prempeh Assembly Hall, admonished the youth to combine sports with education.

He contended that natural talent alone was not enough to make one a star footballer, adding, “You need a sound mind and body to properly nurture your talent to the fullest level.

“It is only education that can help you have a sound mind to make you the best footballer.

“You need to learn to the best of your ability. You should not joke with education because you would regret later in life when you are an illiterate”.
