Nokia Corporation, a Finnish multinational communications corporation, focused on wired and wireless telecommunications has disclosed their plans to open a branch in Ghana in some few months time.

According to them, plans are underway from their Head office in Africa, located in South Africa to settle in Ghana.

Speaking during the launch of four Nokia models namely Nokia 2600 classic, 1209, 1680 classic and 5000 yesterday, the General Manager of Nokia West Africa, Mr. Mark Pritchard noted how Ghana has become significant in their business plans hence their interest to set up an office in this country.

He noted that currently, Nokia, which has the widest market share has about 1billion people using their handset adding that besides their head office in Finland they have opened manufacturing plants in nine countries in the world including Germany, Hungary, India and China.

He indicated that they have Research Departments in 10 countries in the world and haves sales in more than 150 countries adding that according to figures in the 4th quarter of 2007, indicated that Nokia has 40% shares while their main competitors, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericson and LG have 14%, 12%, 9% and 7% respectively.

The General Manager said they have 15 offices in West Africa with Senegal as their Head office, emphasizing that there are some sub sales unit in some parts of West Africa.

Touching on their social responsibilities, he maintained that they are very concerned with social welfare hence their donation of a huge sum of money to the Red Cross to assist the victims of the flood that occurred in the Northern and Western Regions.

Asked whether the standard of Nokia phones produced in other part of the world could be compared to the ones produced in Finland, he responded that Ghanaians should not be scared when they see Nokia phones produced elsewhere other than Finland.

“Any of our factories across the world has the same high standard as the factory in Finland, the one in India has the highest technology more than that of Finland,” he concluded.
