Winneba Pentecost walks for peaceful elections on Sunday

Members of the Winneba Church of Pentecost, on Sunday undertook a peace walk through the Winneba Township to add their voice to the call for all to ensure peaceful elections on December 7, 2008.

Clad in a T-Shirt with political parties' symbols amidst singing and dancing, the 18 Assemblies' Church members went walked through the principal streets of the town.

The parliamentary candidates in the area, Mr Mike Allan Hammah for the NDC, Mr Samuel Owusu Agyei of the NPP and Mr Henry Kweku Bortsie of CPP, all pledged their commitment to peace during the walk.

The walked was organised under the theme “Love and Peace towards a Peaceful Election”.

At the church, video clips of wars that devastated countries like Uganda, Serria Leone and Liberia as a result of elections were shown to members.

The Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Robert Andrew Ghunney, reminded Ghanaians to protect the peace the nation is enjoying.

He assured that government would provide adequate security to maintain peace during the elections.

Preaching the sermon, the Winneba District Pastor of the Church, Nii Lamptey Edison advised Ghanaians to disabuse their minds that the December 7, 2008 elections would be characterized by violence.

He said God is in control and that nothing disastrous would befall the nation.

Pastor Lamptey also urged politicians to follow the footsteps of Christ, who is a symbol of leadership and called on Christians to pray fervently for peaceful, free and fair elections in order to deepen the democratic process. He advised Christians to go out and vote on Sunday and appealed to the youth not to allow themselves to be used by some self-seeking politicians to cause mayhem.
