Africa has no choice but to be open to new agricultural technologies if it wants to be self-sufficient in food production Currently, we've a situation where some western activist organizations, in collaboration with African activists are spreading confusion in the continent about new innovations. Take the case of genetically modified foods. The Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth have pitched tents in Africa to persuade governments not to touch genetically modified foods. After failing to do so in the U.S. where a record number of farmers are currently growing genetically modified crops, these groups have found Africa and some other parts of the developing world to be the ideal places to sow confusion about GM crops. It's now up to African scientists to stand up to these groups. They've an obligation to advise their governments on whether to accept or reject genetically modified crops. They should not leave this responsibility to former students of social sciences who now dominate the debate about genetically modified crops.
