The General Secretary of the Democratic Freedom Party, DFP, Bede Zeiden, says the decision to join or quit any political party is one made by the individual and very little or nothing can be done about it.

He was reacting to the defection on Friday of some 130 members of his party to the national Democratic Congress where they previously held membership in 2008.

The defectors who have since been inducted into the NDC, include the General Secretary, Manfred Nuku Dei and Regional Chairman, C.K. Ayi.

Zeiden told Joy News the defectors have simply exercised their democratic right which highlights the party's belief in the rights of its members to freely associate.

“In a democracy you have no control over people, ok. People take those decisions as individuals and when they take those decisions, there is very little that you can do. At the same time there are other people who will also come to join your party otherwise no political party will win an election from opposition… As people are leaving, you'll be very surprised that others are also coming in,” he said, adding that a lot of people have expressed interest in the DFP.

He said the DFP is focusing on strengthening its grassroots structures to prevent its members from becoming disillusioned.
