Appiah Kubi's hope to succeed Baah-Wiredu dashed

A contender for the Asante Akim North New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency parliamentary primary, Andy Appiah Kubi, has been asked to step aside for peace to prevail in the area.

The seat became vacant following the death of Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.

The processes leading to the selection of his successor have been marred by violence.

Even though Mr. Appiah Kubi was vetted alongside four other contestants on Tuesday, he could not sail through because his decision to represent the NPP has been met with strong opposition by some party supporters.

Mr. Appiah Kubi, who contested the late Minister during the party's last primary but lost, has been accused of being behind Baah-Wiredu's death; an allegation he has denied.

Nana Adu Asabere Kyei, NPP Asante Akim North constituency chairman who confirmed the party's decision to ban Appiah Kubi to Citi FM on Wednesday said it is in the right direction because his entry into the competition has brought division into the party.

"The executive decided that because of the situation that is happening in Asante Akim right now, it would not be good for Kwame Andy himself.” Nana Asabre added

He noted that Appiah Kubi himself informed them that based on security advice, he has been asked not to go to Agogo, the hometown of Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu.
