Kofi Annan Now Legon Chancellor

Former Secretary General of the United Nations, Busumuru Kofi Annan, has been appointed Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon.
Mr. Annan, a Nobel Peace Laureate, succeeds Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, the late Omanhene of Amanokrom and Gyasehene of Akuapim Traditional Area who occupied the Chancellor position until his death three years ago.
His appointment was announced yesterday by the Chairman of the University Council, Tony Oteng-Gyasi at a press conference on the 60th anniversary of the premier university.
The President, John Agyekum Kufuor would on August 11 perform Mr. Annan's investiture and swearing-in ceremony at the University.
The Chancellor is the topmost office of the University and until the adoption of the 1992 Republican Constitution, the position was solely occupied by the President of the country.
The University would use the August 11 ceremony to bestow honorary degrees on some eminent personalities including the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Georgina Wood, and President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr. Muhammed Ibn Chambas.
Other personalities to receive honours include the former Ireland President, Mary Robison; Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Paul Acquah; the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu; the late Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey; and Mr. J.H. Mensah, former Senior Minister.
For the Distinguished Contribution to Public Service category, Dr Robert Lee, a dentist as well as Ms Docia Naki Kisseih, first Ghanaian Chief Nursing Officer would be honoured; and Professor Raymond Bening, Foundation Vice Chancellor of the University of Development Studies, would be honoured for his contribution to tertiary education.
Other recipients in the Distinguished Scholarship category are Prof. Lawrence A. Boadi, Professor of Linguistics; Prof. Gordon R. Woodman, an English professor of Law; and Ms Selena Axelrod Winsnes, an author who worked on the Danish Historical records.
The Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lectures category would include Ghanaian-born Paul Boateng, British High Commissioner to South Africa; and James D. Wolfensohn former President of the World Bank.
