Nii Allotey Odunton, the newly elected General Secretary of the International Seabed Authority

President John Agyekum Kufuor yesterday congratulated Nii Allotey Odunton, the newly elected General Secretary of the International Seabed Authority, a United Nations (UN) Agency.   The President said he was elated that Nii Allotey Odunton had joined the line of Ghanaian nationals excelling in international relations. This was when Nii Odunton paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.

Until his election by acclamation on June 6, this year, in Kingston, Jamaica, he was the Deputy General Secretary. He would take office in January 1, 2009 and would serve for a four year-term.

President Kufuor noted that there was so much unexploited wealth in Ghana's seabed and said  government would do everything to protect this for posterity and expressed the hope that Nii Odunton could play an important role.

Also at the Castle was the Indian External Affairs Minister, Mr Anand Sharma, who was in the country to deepen Ghana-India relations. This is his first stop in his African tour.
