THE WESTERN Regional Police Command last Friday declared war on criminals in some communities within the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis where 25 suspected hardened criminals and drug dealers were rounded off.
The exercise, which was undertaken by 10 officers and 111 men at 4 am, saw the police moving to the various hide-outs of the drug dealers.
The swoop was aimed at getting rid of criminals in the area who were bent on terrorizing the activities of businessmen and other investors who would be operating in the region as a result of the oil discovery.
Some of the communities the police visited included Kwesimintsim, Assakae, Kejebil and Apowa where 12 suspected criminals were apprehended and the police retrieved from them dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, mobile phones and other offensive weapons including scissors.
The police gave the names of the suspected criminals, whose ages ranged between 17 and 50, as Kwame Esuon, Papa Eric, Prince Mark Baidoo, John Cobbinah, Dawuda Mustapha, Nii Sackey, Nana Foster, Francis Kwameson, John Eshun, Alex Tay, Kwesi Nsonyameye and Isaac Biney.
At New Takoradi, one Latif Adebayor, a Nigerian, who had been on the police wanted list for stealing, was also arrested together with one Paul Aidoo, whom the police found on him some dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
Ten persons, including a woman and a Nigerian, were also arrested at around Zenith Hotel in Takoradi and the police retrieved from them dried leaves suspected to be 'wee'.
They were Solomon Quashie, Apiaho Rawlings, Francis Alotey, Janet Arhin, Moses Mensah, John Ahiamoah, Afedi Nyarko, Emmanuel Dodzi, Emmanuel Gyamfi and Sunday Agu.
The police also arrested one Samuel Ofori Agyeman at Mankessim White House in Takoradi who was in possession of 900 pieces of cartridges, three imported unlicensed single-barrel guns and claimed his late father gave them to him to sell.
Briefing the press after the exercise, the Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mohammed Alhassan, said the swoop was an ongoing aggressive police operation to rid the metropolis of criminals.
He said the exercise would be sustained and warned all the perceived drug dealing communities in the region that more snap checks would be embarked upon. He also noted that suspects now under arrest would be screened and those found culpable would be prosecuted.
