Concerned Rail Workers Ask For Probe Member To WithdrawBy Innocent Appiah - newtimesonline.comWed, 30 Apr 2008 | Print | E-Mail | PDF | Graphics Version Business/Finance BARELY two weeks after a group of railway workers calling itself the 'Concerned workers of Railways' called for a forensic audit to check the finances of the Ghana Railway Company, claiming that several hundred thousands Ghana cedis have been stolen, the issue is taking another dimension. This time, the leadership of the group at a news conference in Accra on Thursday, called for the withdrawal of a member of the committee inaugurated to probe the GRC, in addition to representatives of workers and management on the committee to facilitate the committee’s work. Led by their spokesman, J.K. Dadzie, they asked: 'How can we have complainants and accused on the same panel? It should rather be an independent body in order to stem manipulation and tilting the findings towards a certain direction,' they said. The group lauded a suggestion by the chairman of the committee, Albert Obbin, that since the controversy is between the two parties, they should not be part of the committee as their presence could compromise its findings. 'Since the Paramount Chief of Nsein in the Western Region, Awulae Agyeifi Kwame II, who is a member of the Railway board of directors, resigned from the committee, we expect Mr Hackman who is the acting Deputy Chief Internal Auditor to also bow out of the committee,' they emphasised. According to the group, they are not supporting any faction within the company but what they want is to deal with the situation diligently so as to come out with the facts in other to save the GRC from collapse. 'What we are looking for is to save the company. There are more serious things to tackle rather than wasting out time on accusations and counter-accusations. If we are not careful the company will fold up. So our humble appeal to President J.A. Kufuor is to intervene as a father of the nation to prevent the present situation from escalating to something else,' they noted. The group mentioned that the Chief Cashier, G. Myers should be thoroughly investigated. They are alleging that Mr Myers, who was asked to hand over on January 25, all documents in his possession to enable management to look into the loss of some money, turned against management and connived with his cohorts to promote the strike by the workers. |
