Winneba (C/R), May 17, GNA-The authorities of the University of Education, Winneba are doing their best to ensure that by the beginning of the next semester, students would be able to access examination results through the Internet from outside the University. However, the country, would have to install a powerful ICT infrastructure to ensure the successful implementation of the programme. The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah said this at 9th Congregation of the University at Winneba during which over 280 students graduated from the university. He said the University that currently offered Distance Education had a students population of 6,500 with 60 per cent of the number constituting females.
Prof Anamuah-Mensah said the introduction of distance learning as a parallel educational delivery system had provided the opportunity for more teachers to take part in tertiary teacher education programmes while in school.
He said teachers pursuing the programme could immediately apply their skills and knowledge in the classroom. Prof Anamuah-Mensah expressed regret that even though the University lacked adequate resources and infrastructure students intake continued to increase.
He said: "While we are uncomfortable about this situation, we are also mindful of the fact that a large number of schools in the rural areas cannot boast of even two trained teachers, a major factor responsible for the continuous decline in performance".
