Aflao, (V/R) April. 30, GNA - The Ghana Police Service is to launch an operation soon to impound all unregistered motor bikes throughout the country.

The order to Police Stations to this effect has already been given by the administration, Dr Kofi K. Manfo, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, disclosed this when interacting with members of the border community at Kpakakope, near Aflao.

Dr Manfo was with a team comprising the Deputy Ministers of the Interior and the Volta Region, Captain (Rtd) Nkrabeah Effah-Dartey and Mr Joseph Nayan respectively, which visited the area of Friday to assess the security situation in view of the worrying political upheaval in Togo.

He said unregistered motorbikes were being widely used in committing crimes in the country

"We have to do something as crimes, including bag and mobile phone snatching involving people using unregistered motorbikes keep rising," the Deputy IGP said.

Members of the community had been complaining to Dr Manfo about harassment of Togolese motor taxi operators by Ghanaian Policemen. They said it was the only means of transportation in the area. Dr Manfo said reports had it that some of the operators used the service as a pretext to bring in un-customed bikes into the country for sale.

He said some of these bikes were believed to have been stolen. Captain Effah-Dartey told the frontier communities to co-exist with the Togolese military at duty posts to enable them to live in peace. "Do not hoot at them," he said, apparently referring to an alleged incident when Togolese soldiers shot across the border into a crowd at Aflao for allegedly hooting at them.

He asked the Ghanaian border security to remain vigilant to protect the frontier from illegal activities and persons.
