Chiefs told to help ensure sanity in land administration

Foase, (ASH) April 30, GNA---Professor S. O. Asiamah, Provost of the College of Architecture and Planning, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has called on chiefs to help bring some level of sanity and discipline in the land management system of the country.

He said as custodians and stewards of the land, they should collaborate with the appropriate government agencies to scale down land disputes.

Professor Asiamah noted that effective land administration could promote the development of the communities and reduce poverty among the people.

The Provost was speaking at the Ashanti Regional launch of the Fifth Constitutional Week Celebration at Foase in the Bosomtwe-Atwima Kwanwoma District on Friday. It was organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and activities lined up include public forums and radio talk shows.

Professor Asiamah also drew attention to the need for chiefs to be abreast of provisions in the Constitution regarding stool lands and to appreciate that they hold lands in trust of their people.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, in an address read for him, asked the Commission to intensify its education activities to encourage the people to be more alive to their civic responsibilities.

He said it was by so doing that the democracy would be sustained in the country.

Mr Boafo noted that active participation of the people in governance could be achieved only when they are well informed and understood the issues at stake.
