ICU Officer calls for policies to sustain industries

Tema, April 30, GNA - Mr. Morgan Ayawine, Tema Municipal Principal Industrial Relations Officer on Saturday called on the government to formulate policies that would sustain and expand industries in order to open up job opportunities for the youth.

He noted that the influx of foreign goods had led to the collapse of most of the industries, saying that the sustenance and expansion of the existing ones would give hope to the jobless.

He spoke to newsmen at Tema, when workers of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) converged at the forecourt of the Tema Community and later departed to the Trade Fair Centre for a parade to mark this year's May Day celebrations.

Mr Ayawine asked casual labourers to rest assured because their interest would be addressed as contained in the new Labour law, saying that under it, no worker would be cheated.

Addressing them earlier, the Industrial Relations Officer however, entreated the entire workers of the ICU to remain united to avoid infiltrators into their ranks.

The workers bore placards with the inscriptions, "Welcome National Health Insurance Scheme", "Quality education must be affordable to the ordinary Ghanaian", "Salary cannot take workers home", Employers can succeed with government's assistance and 'Capital, labour and motivation increases productivity."

Before their departure, the workers, wearing their companies "T" shirts chanted patriotic songs amid drumming and dancing.

He said the Traffix Restaurant Limited in Tema would take over the management of the Tema Industrial and Recreational Area (TIRA) the workers' meeting place, which was abandoned following the sour relations between the ICU and the Trades Union Congress.
