8 Universities To Do Battle At The Newsroom 2016

Eight (8) Universities that run Communication Programmes have registered to participate in this year’s Newsroom Competition organised by Cheetah Communications in collaboration with Ghana Journalists Association, Advertising Association of Ghana and Institute of Public Relations, Ghana.

The Newsroom Competition is a simulated News Reporting, Corporate Communications and Debating contest among tertiary institutions that offer communication programmes. Participants focus their intellect on a hypothetical assignments based on best communications practices. Students Teams participating in the competition are engaged in real-time news writing, fact-finding and presentation on corporate communication strategies and oral arguments, as if they were in the newsroom, pitching an account, and strategizing for clients in the real world.

Ghana Institute of Journalism savoured the ultimate in the maiden edition held last year after trouncing the University for Professional Studies, Accra in a nerve-racking grand finale.

Five institutions – Central University, Pentecost University College, University of Professional Studies, Accra, Ghana Institute of Journalism and Sikkim Manipal University – took part in the maiden edition. Competing institutions were assessed by a Judging Panel made up of Practising Communication Professionals and Academics.

This year, Eight (8) Universities – University for Development Studies, Islamic University College, Central University, Pentecost University College, University of Cape Coast, Ghana Institute of Journalism, African University College of Communications and Sikkim Manipal University (Academic City College) – have registered to participate in the competition.

This year’s contest is themed; Communicating Peace for Nationhood to reflect the mood of the nation as Ghanaians ready themselves to elect national leaders in December. Before everyday’s contest, representatives of participating institutions will be given the opportunity to read a brief peace message on behalf of their institutions.

The Newsroom 2016 will be heralded by a Newsroom Clinic on Wednesday, 5th October, 2016 where seasoned Communication Professionals and Experts will take contestants and communications students through the rigours of modern-day News Reporting, Corporate Communications Strategies, Public Speaking and Public Relations practices, as well as “Compreneurship”.

“We have put together a team of experts led by Professor Nana Essilfie-Conduah, Chair of Journalism at African University College of Communications, to put compelling perspectives to critical issues at this year’s Newsroom Clinic. It’s a must-attend for all who hope to benefit from their extensive repertoire of knowledge”, Raymond Baxey, CEO of Cheetah Communications, disclosed.

The object of The Newsroom Competition is to synthesise theory with practice and put communication students in competitive stead for the fast-paced job market, as social media, especially, continues to redefine the frontiers of communications practice. The Newsroom Competition commences with preliminary rounds from Tuesday, 11th to Friday, 14th October, 2016. The best Four (4) Universities that would emerge from the preliminary rounds would settle the scores at the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, 18th October, 2016 with the best Two (2) Universities contending for superiority at the Grand Finale dubbed the “Headline” on 21st October, 2016.
