Winneba, C/R), Aug. 25, GNA - Neenyi Ghartey VII, the Omanhene of Efutu, has lauded Plan International Ghana, a child-centred non-governmental organisation (NGOs), for implementing educational scholarship schemes as a key to long-term empowerment for young people.

He said from time immemorial, people have been in need, not through any fault of theirs, and for an NGO like Plan International Ghana to take up the responsibility of sponsoring brilliant but needy students are worth commending.

Neenyi Ghartey VII gave the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba on the sideline of the launch of the Plan International Ghana/Prudential Life Insurance five-year scholarship scheme for senior high schools.

The $541,080 scholarship project, which is being implemented by Plan International Ghana with funding from the Prudential Life Insurance aims at providing support to 555 brilliant but needy young girls and boys in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Greater Accra, Volta and Western Regions.

The project seeks to safe guard the future of the beneficiaries and to give them an opportunity to pursue their ambitions and aspirations in life.

The Omanhene explained that government alone cannot meet the needs of the educational sector; and it is high time corporate entities support educational funding and scholarship.

He also expressed gratitude to the Prudential Life Insurance for partnering Plan International Ghana in implementing the scholarship scheme.

Neenyi Ghartey said the scholarship scheme would go a long way to reduce the incidence of students dropping out of school as a result of financial difficulties of parents and guardians.

He advised the beneficiaries to take advantage of the scholarship scheme and learn very hard for their own good.

He also appealed to Plan International Ghana to extend the scholarship package to the three private senior high schools in the Efutu Municipality. GNA
