Scholars call for policy to incorporate entrepreneurship in university courses

Dean of the Center for International Education at the University of Cape Coast is calling for a policy that would ensure entrepreneurship is instituted as a part of programmes offered in universities.

Professor Rosemond Boohene believes this would make university graduates more entrepreneurial-minded and thereby help address the problem of unemployment in the country.

Professor Boohene spoke to Joy Business at a webinar organized by knowledge sharing community, TedEx Accra in partnership with the Association of African Universities.

“Entrepreneurship cannot eliminate unemployment but it can help to reduce it. All that we have to do in our higher educational institutions is to help the students to develop an entrepreneurial mindset,” she said.

“Those who want to go into business we help them develop the ideas, nurture them and see if they can start businesses and grow them into viable and scalable businesses,” she added.

She suggested that when teaching entrepreneurship courses the pedagogical use should combine both theory and practice to enable the students to apply what they have been thought.

“It is when they apply that they would be encouraged to try out whether they can start their business or they would not be able to start.

Director of ICT Services and Knowledge Management of the Association of African Universities, Nodumo Dhlamini also stressed that the importance of such a policy cannot be over-emphasized.
