Would It Really Matter?

He may be quite correct on the vacation, or annual-leave, part of his riposte, but he definitely cannot gainsay the fact that Ghana’s current High Commissioner to the United Kingdom used part of his recent presence in the country to do politics, as he ought not to have done (See “I Haven’t Abandoned My Post – Victor Smith” Starrfmonline.com / Ghanaweb.com 8/20/16). But then, who said that any of the key players of the Rawlings-minted ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) was ever the bosom friend of Truth? I mean, didn’t it take Chairman Jerry John Rawlings nearly two decades to admit having taken at least $2 million in monies belonging to the Nigerian taxpayer from the late Gen. Sani Abacha?

And that was only half of the truth. Nigerian anti-corruption investigators and the official courier who slammed the suitcase containing the payola onto the recipient’s mahogany desk in the old Danish slave fort at Osu, Accra, claim that the monetary content of the aforesaid suitcase was at least $5 million. We must also not forget that until he was appointed the NDC’s diplomatic agent to London, Mr. Victor Smith was a slavishly devoted babysitter and a go-fer for the Rawlings clan. And who said Mr. Smith was too daft to be a genius understudy to, perhaps, the greatest self-righteous liar and scam-artist ever to occupy the august seat of governance in postcolonial Ghana?

Mr. Smith says he only went to Ghana to while away his annual leave. And that is all well and good. But the question here is: Who bumped the East-Akyem, or some such, District Chief Executive from the NDC’s Abuakwa-North parliamentary ticket and replaced the latter’s name with that of Mr. Smith? A leprechaun or Osama Bin Laden? I am here far less concerned about whether his absence from the ancient British capital interrupted the smooth running of his diplomatic duties or not, for I am very certain that no indigenes of London noticed or felt his absence. Definitely not Queen Elizabeth, II, Prince Charles or Prime Minister Theresa May. Rather, what I am concerned about is the apparent shamelessness of the leaders of the National Democratic Congress, including Little Dramani, of course, which makes these rascally robber-barons suppose that they can falsify reality at whim and make the rest of us ravenously lap it up like English spaniels.

I am also fully convinced that whatever he has been doing in the British capital, short of attending parties and socializing with members of the diplomatic community, has absolutely nothing to do with the price of a cup of sugarless tea in London. His is a patent sinecure, a job for the boys. And so no one needs to fret over whether his absence created any diplomatic interruptions, such as when President Mahama was made to sit in the gallery of the Scottish parliament for the consolation prize of an Aberdeen honorary doctorate in “Nobody Cares What It Is.” To be certain, an honorary doctorate from Moscow, where Little Dramani is known to have been awarded his master’s degree in international relations would, no doubt, have been more relevant and respectable.

Very likely, Little Dramani’s honorary doctorate was afforded him for having been so superbly coached in the enviable art of Kleptocracy by that infamous Scottish bastard who has been derailing Danquah’s dream of a civilized modern Ghana for nearly four decades and counting. Now Mr. Smith says he is back in London “and back to my responsibilities.” Well, he had better stay put through the December 7 general election and hope that Little Dramani and Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia are able to rig the ballot once more. Else, he had better fortify his puffy cheeks in preparation for some dirty tooth-pulling slaps from Ms. Gifty Ampofo.
