Kuntanase (Ash), Aug 23, GNA - The delegates' congress of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) to elect new national officers ended abruptly, amid confusion and chaotic scenes.

This followed the controversial decision by the Vetting Committee Chairman to disqualify one of the candidates, contesting for the position of the USAG President.

Supporters of Malik S. Y. Basitilate would have none of that and hell broke loose as they vandalized everything in sight - projectors, tables and chairs.

The swift response of the police helped to prevent matters from getting worse - what would have been a nasty confrontation.

It all started when the chairman of the seven-member committee, Wilson Dabua, announced to the delegates that Basitilate could not meet the qualification requirements because of his inability to produce his academic transcript.

The other members of the committee profusely denied taking any such position and insisted that an academic transcript had never been one of the qualification requirements for the election of the association's national officers.

At this point, irate supporters of the candidate, who felt, somebody wanted to give him a raw deal, went on the rampage, bringing the event, which was being held at the Kessben University College in the Bosomtwi District, to an abrupt end.

The cost of damage to property had not yet been assessed and there was no arrest by the police.
