Explore potential of urine as fertilizer, farmers urged

Ho, Aug. 23, GNA - Agricultural experts have advised farmers in the Ho Municipality to explore the potential of urine as base fertilizer for healthy crops.

Experts from the Municipal Agriculture Development Unit said studies and experiments showed that urine played important roles in developing healthy crops and soil enrichment.

The workshop, organised under the auspices of Centre for Research in Efficient Agricultural Technology (CREAT) and the USAID in five municipalities in the Volta Region, was focused on studies conducted on the sustainable management of agricultural lands and resources in the Municipal and District Assemblies.

Mr Richard Ahiadu, Director of the Municipal Agriculture Development Unit, said if farmers could diligently follow the urine application guide, their crops would be much healthier for human consumption with much benefit for farmlands.

He called on government to support the project by providing funds and other logistics to reduce the application of inorganic fertilizers, which erode nutrients from the soil.

Maxwell Agbenorhevi, an Agricultural Economist with the USAID, urged farmers to use land judiciously to ensure food security and job creation.

He advised farmers to form unions to take advantage of financial schemes and share knowledge for the growth of the sector.
