The Mobile Telecommunications giant, MTN has extended this year’s Mobile Money (MoMo) month celebration to the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to mark their 50th anniversary.

The forum which was part of the anniversary celebrations, opened an inter tertiary national debate on the topic, “Mobile Money Plays a Critical Role in Promoting Financial Inclusion.”

Institutions that took part in the debate are Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS), Regional Students Representative Council (RSRC), Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), Teacher Training Association of Ghana (TTAG) and National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG).

Mr. Eli Hini, General Manager, Mobile Financial Service, MTN, said, MTN is privileged to partner NUGS to debate a topical issue that appears not to have had as much focus within the student body unlike the general public.

He noted that the subject of financial inclusion is an important one for our country, given its impact on national economy and social development.

Mr. Eli Hini added that as they celebrate the fifth MTN Mobile Money month as well as 20 years of operation in Ghana, there is perhaps no better time than now to encourage our leaders of tomorrow to ponder on this subject.

According to him, financial inclusion is an important subject for our country considering its linkages with poverty reduction, economic growth and employment and overall welfare improvement are well established.

“we each have a role to play in promoting financial inclusion however, we hope to gather more ideas from both the proponents and opponents to move the discussion of driving financial inclusion to the next level,” he stated.

He encourages students to conduct more research into how mobile money is breaking the frontiers of financial inclusion and the prospects it has for Ghana’s economic development.

Kabu Nartey (rep from GUPS), Ndukwe McCarthy Wisdom (rep from RSRC) and Samuel Dobbin (GRASAG) who spoke for the motion scored first with a total score of 221 whereas Derrick Elikem Melesusu (rep from TTAG), Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo (USAG) and Amoako Kwashie Sylvester (NAHSAG-legon) scored second with a total score of 211.
