President of the Pan African Parliament (PAP), Honourable Roger Nkodo Dang has appealed to African states to ratify the Malabo Protocols and Treaties of the African Union (AU), particularly those pertaining to the PAP. “Ratification of the AU Protocols and Treaties adopted in Malabo in 2014 will demonstrate the faith that we have in Africa, the faith we have in the African Union and its vision for Africa,”
Honourable Roger Nkodo Dang stated on Monday, August 1, 2016 in Midrand, South Africa when he officially welcomed PAP members to the second annual Committee
Meetings of PAP’s fourth Parliament. He noted that ratification of the Malabo treaties and protocols by African states will serve as a beacon of hope for the continent’s future and as a demonstration that both Africa and the African Union must continue to move ahead.
Honourable Dang observed that the moment was now ripe for the whole continent and its people to understand and appreciate that Africa stands to gain more with the ratification of the Malabo protocols without threatening the sovereignty of the AU member countries and their national parliaments.
The AU Summit of Heads of State and Government that took place in June, 2014 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea considered and adopted a number of protocols one of which was the Protocol to the Constitutive Act of the African Union relating to the Pan-African Parliament.
The President expressed gratitude to all African national parliaments for ensuring that their members avail themselves and participate in the current PAP Committee meetings despite difficult economic conditions prevailing across the continent. “Your presence here demonstrates the faith that you have in this Parliament and the work it is doing,” the PAP President said. In his welcome address, Honourable Dang also updated the members of parliament about the continued targeted attacks and muggings that the parliamentarians have been subjected to whenever they were in South Africa for the PAP business. The members moved a motion to have the matter debated and discussed exhaustively.
The current PAP Committee Meetings will take place concurrently with several other PAP events including a two-day conference for speakers of parliament from all African countries, as well as several workshops for the PAP permanent committees where the members will interact with various experts on matters pertaining to their committees.
