Bawku farmers expecting good harvest

Bawku (U/E), July 29, GNA - Farmers in the Bawku are expecting a good harvest after the satisfactory rains period over the past few months.

Many of the farmers who cropped millet, groundnuts, and maize said they were expecting a good harvest as most of the crops are at the maturing stage.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency to Mognori, a suburb of the Bawku; Kulungungu, Wedana and Pusiga in the Pusiga District, Navkolga, Atuba, Benguri and Bazua also in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region, saw farmers harvesting fresh groundnuts and other crops.

Mr Awini Adakudugu, a millet and groundnut farmer in Kulungungu and the Badoor communities, said the early groundnut sowed was ready for harvest.

Mr Sampson Gori, a groundnut farmer in the Bazua community, commended the extension officers in the area for their interventions in educating the farmers on the need to make good use of the early rains and impacting into them the right farming methods and technology.

Mr Joseph Akambong, red millet and sorghum farmer from the Akara community in the Garu-Tempane District, said even though the rains had come at the right time, more was needed to be done to restore soil fertility.

Mr Charles Akwotiga, Bawku Municipal Director of Agriculture, described this year's farming season as one of the best and praised the effort of the directorate which embarked on various workshops for them.

He said the Directorate has supported about 75,000 farmers in the area with the needed technical assistance and educated farmers on how they should prepare their farm lands for farming.

He commended the Northern Rural Growth Programme (NRGP) and the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) for their timely initiatives to support farmers.
