One drown and properties destroyed in Bawku

Bawku (U/E), July 29, GNA - Madam Zenabu Mumuni, a 36 year old mother of two, lost her life as a result of heavy rains and floods by the Gonzese River near Bawku in the Upper East Region.

This occurred on Saturday evening whiles returning from the market.

The National Disaster Management Organization in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service in Bawku formed a search party and successfully retrieved the body.

The heavy downpour also left hundreds of people displaced as their homes were inundated with the resultant flood, destroying properties worth thousands of cedis.

Chief Superintendent of Police Lovelace Kaletse Tufutor, Bawku Divisional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that on the 23rd July the police received a formal complained from Mr Mumuni, husband of the deceased on his missing wife.

Mr Tufutor said his outfit collaborated with NADMO and searched for the missing woman and they uncovered her body at the Nayoko community.

He said health authorities were called in and postmortem conducted established that the woman died from drowning. The body was later released to the family for burial.

Mr Sulemana Musah, Bawku Municipal Coordinator for NADMO, disclosed that reports received from officers on the ground indicated that several houses in the municipality and its environs have been destroyed leaving many displaced.
