Avoid taking sides in chieftaincy disputes, politicians urged

Dormaa Ahenkro (B/A), July 29, GNA - Commissioner of Police(COP) James Oppong- Boanuh, the Director of General Services, Ghana Police Service, has called on politicians to avoid taking sides on chieftaincy and land disputes.

He appealed to traditional rulers to rally people around events that promoted peace saying the country's strong chieftaincy institution legacy bequeathed to current generation needed to be upheld.

COP Oppong- Boanuh said this at the second Osagyefo Memorial Lectures organised jointly by the Dormaa Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Dormaa Student Union (DORSU).

The lecture was attended by traditional rulers and the public was under the theme: 'Preserving Our Cultural Heritage Through Peaceful and Incident-Free Election; the Role of Dormaaman'.

The annual event seeks to honour and recognize the outstanding contributions of individuals from Dormaa who have excelled and contributed to the socio-economic development of the area and the entire nation.

This year's lecture was in honour of Osagyefo Agyemang Badu I of blessed memory, and the late Bishop Dr Annor - Yeboah, the founder and former Chairman of the Christian Praise International Church (CPIC).

COP Oppong- Boanuh appealed to nananom to be fair to all political parties and their candidates in their interactions with them and resist politicians who would seek to foment trouble in the area.

He said although elections had its short comings, it remains the only credible source by which leaders are appointed.

COP Oppong- Boanuh expressed concern about the ignorance and lack of education on electoral laws, saying these had the tendency to ignite electoral altercations.

He cautioned the media to play its watchdog role effectively, by avoiding sensationalism, mishandling of information, falsehood and misreporting of issues.

Mrs Hilda Mary Commey, the Principal of the Dormaa Presbyterian Mid-Wifery Training College, said there is the need for Ghanaians to protect the peace prevailing in the country as this is vital for the preservation of the legacies of our forefathers.

She called on the youth to plan their lives properly by seeking the right counsel to enable them make desired impact in the socio-economic life of the country.
