Three people have been reportedly been injured at Damango in the Northern region as two rival groups violently clashed Thursday evening and engaged in sporadic shootings and pelting of stones.
It is not clear the number of casualties but reports indicate the three persons have suffered head injuries.
Fight broke out between supporters of two rival chiefs paralleled enskinned by the Yagbonwura Tutumba Bores Essah I, overlord of the Gonja kingdom and the Alhaji Abass Dangba, head of Kutukure(land owners of Damango).
Following the death of Damangowura Japka Lermu, the kuntukure was mandated by the Damango tradition to elect a candidate to be crowned as Damango chief.
The kingmakers settled on Ngbaripewura, however, the Yagbonwura refused to accept and approve the candidate and went ahead to also elect one Bodonwura Imoro Yakubu which brought bad blood between the two authorities.
This latest clash according to Starr News sources was over who has the right to take royalties from a truck of charcoal from a village called Sur.
The sources say the children of the Bodunwura Imoro (Damangowura enskinned by the Yagbonwura) issued a royal ticket at the village but the truck on reaching Damongo was intercepted by the Ngbaripewura(Damangowura enskinned by the kingmakers) and the ticket torn.
The police were informed and after some deliberations the charcoal truck was released to go.
"However on reaching home the supporters of the chief installed by the kingmakers started throwing stones at the house of the one eskinned by the overlord of the Gonja kingdom destroying the zinc roofing.
"Two young men from the side of the Ngbaripewura fired warning shots in the direction of the Budonwura Imoro Yakubu", the source narrated.
The houses of the two rival chiefs are not far apart, according to Starr FM's Northern regional correspondent Eliasu Tanko.
The shooting starr News learnt came from the side of the Damongowura recognised the Kuntunkure (land owners) of Damongo.
Sources have told Starr News' Eliasu Tanko some warriors from Kusawgu, (where the current Yagbonwura hails from) arrived in Damongo with 2 pickups vehicles to give protection to the Yagbonwura.
District Police Commader, ASP Opoku Agyemang Prempeh confirming to Starr News said the shooting started at about 6pm.
He said his men were able to calm the situation but added that a reinforcement team of police and military personnel were on their way from Tamale to the troubled area.
Checks by Starr News revealed that the place is calm but tensed.
