Wa, July 27, GNA - Mr Peter Tontie Zaato, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Azimpet Business Empire, has said the the Ghana Commercial Agriculture Project (GCAP) has greatly improved the fortunes of many farmers in the Upper West Region.

He said through GCAP's support a 2000 metric tons warehouse has been established in Wa to cater for about 1,300 farmers while another 500 metric tons had also been established in Tumu in the Sissala East District.

Mr Zaato said this is expected to help address the issue of post-harvest loses, reduction in quality of produce and farmers sleeping in the same room with their farm produce in spite of noted health risks.

Mr Zaato, who is also the Managing Director of Petoz Investment Limited, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Wa.

He said initially, the company was working with less than 200 acres but with the GCAP support it has managed to increase the number of acres to 713 acres.

He said GCAP also supported Benninish Ventures to train a total of 220 farmers from Wa Municipal, Wa West and Wa East Districts with 10 demonstration fields set up in various communities.

The CEO of Azimpet Business Empire said GCAP also linked them up with Development Solution Center to train their staff and leaders of the various farmer groups they worked with.

Mr Kwaku Minka Fordjour, Upper West Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), said GCAP now had the capacity to stock all farm produce following the establishment of two warehouses in Wa and in Tumu.

He appealed to soya beans farmers not to cut down on production due to lack of market, saying the United States Department for Agriculture (USDA) would invest a total of US56 million dollars into the poultry industry and the need for Soya beans would be very high.

Mr Francis Nuotaba, Wa Municipal Director of Agriculture, described the closer collaboration with Azimpet Business Empire as fruitful and called for continued support from GCAP.
