Mine accidents and injuries take a downward trend

New-Abirim (E/R), July 25, GNA - Ghana is making strong progress in efforts at keeping employees of the mines safe as available statistics show drastic decline in accidents and injuries.

Mine fatalities dropped from 11, in year 2013, to five last year, while accidents classified as serious reduced to 16 from the 2013 total of 80.

Mr. Sulemanu Koney, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, announced this at an inter-mine first aid and safety competition held in New-Abirem.

The event is organized annually to showcase the preparedness of the mining companies to mitigate health and safety impact relating to their operations.

He underlined the determination of the Chamber to continue work with the relevant authorities and the mining companies to keep accidents further down.

Obrepong Akwasi Amo Kyeretwire, chief of Abirem, urged the Minerals Commission to rigidly enforce the mining laws.

He asked that small and medium scale miners were made to reclaim mined lands.

Firm measures must also be put in place to stop illegal miners from destroying the environment.

Mr. Paul Aboagye Dadzie, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North, singled out for praise Newmont Akyem Gold Mining Company, for the priority it was giving to environmental safety.

The acting General Manager of Newmont Akyem Mines, Mr Yaw Okyere Ntrama, gave the assurance that it would never comprise on the safety of the workers and the environment, something that for two years running, had won it 'Best Safety Mine Award'.

The mine would in addition, work closely with the assembly and the communities to bring development to the people and spoke of the supply of potable water and environmental sanitation facilities.

Golden Star Mining Company, Wassa, scored 72 points to win the competition and each member of its safety team was presented with a laptop computer.

Newmont Akyem Mines came second with 65 points, and its team members received a 24 inch flat screen television each.
