Edward Bawa, the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency, could lose this year's election due to the recent infighting in the party and growing disaffection towards him.
The Progressive People's Party (PPP) candidate, George Akanfari has succeeded in gaining ground in places hitherto reserved for the NDC.
Over the weekend, Mr. Akanfari met a group of disgruntled NDC youth that operate under the name 'Lailai NDC Youth Group' at Bongo.
In recent times, the group has expressed disappointment in Edward Bawa and his supporters.
Mr Akanfari met the Lailai NDC Youth as part of his plans to explain PPP's policies and his own plans for Bongo to them.
The Lailai NDC Youth Group has always insisted on voting massively for President John Mahama in the presidential election, but voting for Mr Bawa has always doubtful.
At the meeting with the PPP candidate, the majority of the 500 members of Lailai NDC Youth Group described the PPP candidate as a unifier, sincere and serious-minded although the group's leadership did not give an assurance to vote for George Akanfari come December 7, 2016.
The leaders promised to state their position as the elections draw nearer.
They have on several occasions vowed to vote against NDC's Edward Bawa.
Mr Akanfari, in an interview, said he was very excited that politics in the Bongo constituency was changing, saying, “anywhere I go people come out in their numbers and sit patiently to listen to my message. They seem not to care much about parties any longer; they are ready to listen to the message and I am sure once they find wisdom in that they will vote for the PPP.”
He said the PPP's leader Papa Kwesi Nduom knows how to create jobs and opportunities for the youth to develop themselves to be able to contribute to the development of their communities in the constituency.
“We have suffered for far too long, Bongo lags behind in terms of development and we stand to develop Bongo. PPP will develop Bongo.”
