Police officer murders 3 relatives, commit suicide

Tema, July 26, GNA - Residents around P.S. Global, near Tema Community 25, were on Monday evening thrown into a state of shock when a policeman allegedly killed himself after murdering his mother-in-law and two children.

Lance Corporal Wilfred Amuzu, who was with the Rapid Deployment Force of the Tema Police Regional Command, is said to have booked the AK 47 assault rifle for duty but ended up using it to commit the crime.

The bodies of the dead have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to the media.

ASP Obeng stated that the Command has commenced investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident.

Information gathered by the Ghana News Agency indicated that Amuzu's wife was not at home at the time of the incident.

Amuzu, who was living with the wife and children at Gbetsiley in the the Kpone-Katamanso district, was said to have had marital problems leading to the wife moving out with the children to reside at the place where the incident occurred.

Madam Diana Tetteh, a neighbour of the deceased, told the GNA that at about 1600 hours, they heard three gun shots in sequence from the house and later a fourth one.

According to Madam Tetteh, some residents reported the gun shot incident to the Dawhenya Police and officers came to the scene.

She said when the door was opened, the police officers saw that Amuzu had committed suicide after killing his two sons aged about three years and four months, his mother-in-law who was at the time of the incident bathing the younger boy.

Madam Rafa Iddrisu wife of Amuzu, told the media on Tuesday that Amuzu visited them twice on Monday informing them that he has left some money with DOVVSU for them adding however that he did not misbehave at the time of his visit.

She added that when he finally left at about 15:30 hours, knowing that he was going for night duties, she left the house to ask for her sister's help to rent a house since Amuzu was yet to heed to the advice of DOVVSU officers to rent a place for them.
