Accra, July 22, GNA - A Government delegation led by Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, has presented food items to the people of Lante Djan We in Accra towards the celebration of the Homowo Festival.

The items were six bags of maize, four drums of red oil, two boxes each of schnapps and castle bridge, six cartons each of beer and soft drinks, four cartons of Guinness, 10 boxes of bottled water and 2,000 Ghana cedis.

The Homowo, which means hunting at hunger, is celebrated by the Ga-Dangme people across the world.

Nii Lantei Otanka II, the Lante Djan We Mantse, speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the donation, expressed gratitude to the Government and the AMA for their kind gesture.

He called on the authorities to ensure that Ga Mashie celebrates the festival peacefully and appealed to opinion leaders to advise the youth to desist from causing confusion during the celebrations.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the Minister of Youth and Sports, and Member of Parliament for Odododiodioo, told the GNA that the Homowo Festival is intrinsically linked to the Passover Feast, which is celebrated annually by the Jewish people, hence the Ga-Dangmes adopting it as their festival.

He gave the assurance that the festival would be celebrated peacefully and called on the youth to show unity and love before, during and after the occasion.

Dr Vanderpuije, the AMA Chief Executive, said the donation of the items was a policy of the Government and the Assembly to support the chiefs and the people during the festival.

He urged the citizenry to shun petty differences and remain united to help champion the development plans of the communities in Ga Mashie.
