Robert Dwamena, the Managing Director (MD) of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) was presented a plaque after a motivational speech during the graduation ceremony of the College of Engineering of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
The ECG MD, who graduated from the KNUST with a degree in Geodetic Engineering about 35 years ago, was given a standing ovation by the enthusiastic students and other people present when he received the award from Dr. Kwame Sarah Mensah, Chairman of the University Council, KNUST.
The standing ovation that was given to Mr. Dwamena was not a surprise since the crowd loved and grasped his thought-provoking motivational speech.
The 50th congregation of the KNUST was attended by dignitaries from the academia, politicians, traditional leaders, parents, students and people from all walks of life at the Great Hall at the KNUST.
Delivering his motivational speech, Mr. Dwamena admonished graduates from tertiary institutions, especially the universities to accept postings to the rural areas at their various workplaces so that they could play meaningful roles to transform the country to benefit the masses.
According to him, most graduates of today always want to work in the big cities where they could wear flashy dresses and work in comfortable air-conditioned offices.
He said graduates that would accept postings to the rural areas would get the opportunity to develop their skills and broaden the knowledge acquired from school and also come out with new innovations and projects to positively impact society.
The ECG guru, who started work from the grassroots after graduation and went through the ranks in the institution, told the graduates that “there is no short cut in life.”
Mr. Dwamena, whose delivery was perfect and concise, also urged the graduates not to limit themselves to only what they have studied in school, stressing that in this computer era, it is important that graduates explore all areas available both locally and international in order to make it to the top.
The ECG boss stressed the need for graduates to discover their own potentials and remain disciplined at all times to attain their goals in life.
