NDC Abuakwa North NDC nominee blames leadership for resignation
JUL 22, 2016 LISTEN

The immediate past National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary nominee for the Akyem Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern Region, Anthony Osei Gyimah, has blamed the leadership of the NDC for his resignation as the party’s parliamentary nominee.

He claims the party leadership's failure to address divisions within the party in the constituency forced his resignation.

Mr. Gyimah resigned as parliamentary nominee for the NDC in the Akyem Abwakwa North Constituency last Monday, fueling claims he stepped down to allow Ghana's High Commissioner to the UK, Victor Smith, to take over the position.

But, Mr. Gyimah in an interview with Citi News claimed that the party leadership's failure to address petitions about  divisions in the constituency forced him to resign.

“It all stems from the fact that after the declaration of the primary results, last year in November, I started getting some negative sentiments whereby they were creating some divisions in the constituency within the NDC,” he explained.

“As much as I tried to bring the party together, the divisions were getting deeper and deeper. We've got only four months to the election, andt with this division, it was difficult for me to even start my campaign. I have tried, I have brought in elders, everybody to help but still it was not working,” he lamented.

It is however unclear what sort of division Mr. Gyimah is referring to since there had not been any public awareness of internal wrangling in the constituency.

There are suggestions he may have simply reached a deal with Mr. Victor Smith, hence his decision to step aside.
