The Medical Superintendent of the Tema General Hospital, Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Edusei, has called on stakeholders to consider rebuilding and expanding the facility to prevent the weak structure from collapsing.

According to Mr. Opoku Edusei, the General Hospital which was established over 50 years ago has not seen any major renovation works, saying the time has come come for the facility to be given a face-lift and an upgrade.

Dr. Opoku Edusei made this known when he thanked the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Tema West Constituency; Carlos Ahenkorah, donated some hospital equipment worth 60 thousand dollars to the Tema General Hospital.

“When you come to the Tema General Hospital, you will see makeshift structures which dates back to 1954 when the hospital was built, and there are serious cracks all over so if one day you come and you don’t find me, then it means that the building has collapsed on me, “he lamented.

He said apart from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, the Tema General Hospital is one of the major hospitals with a large size of land which could be used for expansion works but till date nothing has been done.

He said the Tema General Hospital could be upgraded and developed into a teaching hospital since it has all it takes except the structures to start a training school.

“…Way back, somebody rejected the notion that there should be a nursing training school here. That was abandoned so many years ago. I don't know for what reason. Now we are putting up nursing schools in areas where they don't have hospitals for teaching so during the holidays, they all come here from all over the country so why have we abandoned ours? Why can't we renovate and start using our nursing training school,” Dr. Opoku Edusei lamented further.

“I think that somebody must adopt this place just as was done for the Ridge Hospital and other major hospitals in Accra so that it can be given a facelift and upgraded into a teaching hospital status.”

He said the Tema General Hospital being the only referral facility in the area, must be rebuilt and not refurbished as monies for refurbishment could be used to build a new structure.

“We can’t continue renovating this facility over and over because monies for renovation could build an additional facility for the hospital.”
