The Electoral Commission has permitted National Health Insurance (NHI) registrants to take part in the ongoing Abetifi bye-elections, Joynews has gathered.

This development, sources say has angered residents and polling agents who want the EC to ban the people in accordance with Supreme Court (SC)’s order on May 5.

SC in a case brought before it by a former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako challenging the credibility of the voters’ register ordered the EC on May 5 to delete names of NHI registrants as well as those of minors and dead persons.

Another case of interpretation filed by one of the plaintiffs, Abu Ramadan in reaction to the EC’s behavior towards the SC’s order resulted in a more stern order in which the court cautioned it not to plunge the country into chaos.

The EC later furnished the court with over 56,772 names as NHIS registrants in the electoral roll. It was ordered to delete the names.

Even though some persons predicted the EC would refuse to comply as it did earlier, the Commission at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) announced it has deleted 56,772 names from the voters’ register.
