Free Gbagbo Campaign In Accra

At exactly 4:00pm today, hundreds of progressives from all over West Africa will gather at the Teachers’ Hall in Accra for the launch of the “Free Gbagbo Campaign”.

The signature campaign which was launched in La Cote D’Ivoire has already gathered more than three million signatures.

Many progressives around the world insist that former President Laurent Gbagbo’s government was ousted by foreign forces and their local collaborators because of his bold stand against domination from the colonial metropolis.

Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other human rights organisations have questioned the fact that only Gbagbo and his supporters have been put on trial whiles those on the rebel side are treated as statesmen and women.

Indeed available evidence points to the fact that most of the atrocities committed during the Ivorian civil war were carried out by rebel forces on the side of President Alhassane Ouattara.

President Gbabo’s only crime is that he insisted on the recount of votes in accordance with the provisions of the Ivorian constitution and law.

President Laurent Gbagbo has been held at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague since November 2012.

He was arrested in the Presidential Palace in Abidjan by French Special Forces after a long civil war and a dispute over election results.

His arrest followed the second round of voting in the Ivorian election of November 2010 in which he was declared winner by the Constitutional Council.

According to article 94 of the Ivorian Constitution, it is the Constitutional Council, which settles election disputes and proclaims the results of Presidential elections.

This event is being hosted by the Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG) and would be attended by people from all walks of life.
