Dalun (N/R), July 03, GNA - Rural Education for Empowerment Programme (REEP), a non-governmental organisation, has donated 15 bicycles to 15 pupils in the Kumbungu District to facilitate their commuting to school.

The beneficiaries are from 10 communities, including Dalun, Nawuni, and Dalun-Kukuo, Kanfiehiyili.

This brings to 62, the number of pupils, who have received bicycles from REEP since 2012 to enable them to get to school on time.

Mr Abukari Abdul-Fatawu, the Director of REEP, who presented the bicycles to the pupils at Dalun, said the donation formed part of a supplementary project being undertaken by REEP with support from Kavli Trust, a Norwegian company, to reduce the challenges pupils went through to access education in rural areas.

Mr Abdul-Fatawu, who is also the Progressive People's Party's Parliamentary Nominee for the Kumbungu Constituency, said the beneficiary pupils were selected after they were observed to be travelling long distances to school making them get to school late and tired.

He said the pupils also undertook household chores, which made them to report late to school.

Ms Andani Sumaya, a pupil from Kumbungu D/A Junior High School, a beneficiary, who spoke on behalf of the others, said they lived in villages far away from their schools so the bicycles would be of great help to them.
