Stoning Mahama’s Convoy “Shameful” – Catholic Bishops

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has described the recent alleged pelting of stones on the convoy of President John Mahama as “despicable and shameful.”

The Conference noted such act must not be countenanced in Ghana’s politics since it “represents an attack on the sovereignty of the land whose symbol the President represents.”

According to the Bishops, the news came as “a shock and disbelief” to them as it went viral in mainstream and social media that the president’s convoy came under attack during his ‘Accounting to the People Tour’ in the stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) – the Ashanti region.

“We cannot fathom why a group of Ghanaians will attack the convoy of the President in this manner and wish to call on the perpetrators of this act to be ashamed of themselves, repent of their sins and seek forgiveness from God,” the Bishops said in a statement signed by their president, Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu.

The Bishops have therefore “condemned” the act and called on the police to deal with those who have been arrested.

“We are pleased to learn that the Police have arrested some alleged perpetrators of this shameful act. We pray that all those involved and/or behind it will be arrested and brought to book sooner than later. The full rigours of the law must be applied in this instance while steps must be taken to deal with all people who visit violent attack on others in the name of politics,” they asserted.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti regional Minister John Alexander Ackon has denied reports that the convoy was attacked and pelted with stones in the region on Wednesday. “No one stoned the president’s convoy...I was in the convoy and the president’s convoy is safe,” Mr. Ackon told the Morning Starr with Nii Arday Clegg.

However, the police has confirmed arresting two people in connection with the purported attack.
