JUN 30, 2016 LISTEN

There was drama at Wednesday's sitting of the Public Accounts Committee when a former Director at the Gender, Children and Social Protection Ministry interrupted the session midway, to dispel allegations she absconded with 14,000 cedis.

The sector Minister, Oye Lithur at the sitting said the former Director made away with the said amount, adding that several efforts to retrieve it proved futile.

“The Ministry wrote to the former Director of Children and we informed  her but she has not responded despite several visits and several reminders,” the Minister said.

However, after witnessing the proceedings on national television, Madam Yahya stormed the committee room to straighten the records.

According to her, the Minister lied to the committee that she was nowhere to be found despite several letters and reminders to her.

She explained to the Committee how she had been locked out of her office thereby preventing her from providing documentation covering the expenses.

Oye Lithur did not deny or confirm the allegation made by Madam Yahya.

Ministry overspends 2012 budget
The AG also accused the Ministry of over spending its budget by GHC 1.7 million in 2012. Five payment vouchers totaling GHC 38, 057 were without expenditure documentations.

Responding to these allegations, Mrs Oye Lithur said “there was an urgent need to construct an office for the Ministry and the Ministry of Finance provided releases for that purpose.”

She however stated that lack of funds had forced the Ministry to abandon the projects, although huge sums had already gone into it.
