THE Western Regional Women's wing of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) last Friday put smiles on the faces of female inmates at the Sekondi Prisons and two other orphanages operating in the Metropolis, by donating assorted items to them.

The donation, worth around GHc50,000 was the brain child of the Western Regional Women Organizer of the party. The items include; bags of rice, toiletries, pads, 100 pieces of blanket, mosquitoes nets, mosquito repellents, bags of sugar, rice, pieces of washing soaps and powder.

The gesture was to show love as well as put smiles on the faces of members of the beneficiary groups. The presentation was made by the Regional Women Organizer -Miss Anita Annan and her two deputies -Magdalene Araba Tagoe and Beatrice Sam, with assistance from the National Women Organizer -Hajia Zenabu Mahama.

Presenting the items, the Regional Women Organizer, Miss Anita Annan told the inmates that they decided to donate the items to them to show them love.  Anita added that the reason why they decided to add the pads to the items was because of the problems female inmates go through during the period of their menses.

“We are women and mothers and we understand the problems we go through during the period of their menses. So we decided to bring you the few pads in order for you to use them”, she said. The first deputy Women Organizer, Madam Magdalene Araba Tagoe, on her part, added that the fact that they (inmates) were in prison did not mean they were not part of society.

She stated; “You are part of us despite the fact that your freedom has been curtailed. As a result, we in the NDC Women wing decided to come and assist you with these few items you will need for survival.”

The Officer in charge of the Female Prison, Supt. Hannah Ewoame who received the donation on behalf of the inmates expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the NDC Women's wing.  According to her, they did not expect the NDC Women's wing to come to their (inmates) with such wonderful and valuable presentation.

She, as a result, pledged to use the items for the purpose, for which they were donated. The NDC Women's wing later joined the inmates to worship and pray to the almighty God.

On Sunday, the Women's wing extended their philanthropic gesture to the Egyam Orphanage where food items including bags of rice, sugar, pieces of blanket amongst others were donated to the Orphanage, which has a total of about 40 children.

The head of the Orphanage, Mr. Daniel Payne who received the items thanked the NDC women's wing for the kind gesture. Payne reminded the group that the Orphanage was registered with the Social Welfare and undertakes activities in the interest of the people in it.

The Women's wing, from there moved to the Rhema Rehabilitation Center at Kejabil, to also donate similar items to them.  The Rhema Rehabilitation Center is a place where drug and alcohol addicts were being rehabilitated.

A total of 30 people undergoing rehabilitation are currently on admission there.  A former Regional Treasurer of the party, Madam Ewura Esi who addressed the people reminded them to count themselves lucky to be at the Center, and advised them not to go back to their old days.

She reminded the people again that President John Dramani Mahama and the ruling party has been thinking about them hence the donation.
