JUN 29, 2016 LISTEN

The Flagbearer of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, has said that although the designers of the seat of government, the Flagstaff House, failed to make the edifice accessible to physically challenged persons, he would occupy the facility as Ghana's first President in a wheelchair.

Ivor Greenstreet made the audacious statement when he took his turn to speak to Ghanaians on his party's vision , going into the November polls, at the Institute of Economic Affairs' (IEA), Evening Encounter Series.

After delivering a speech participants acknowledged as in-depth and inspiring on his party's policies, the man whose oratory has been lauded by many who have critically listened to him, said the lavish structure is not disability friendly since no one ever believes that someone in a wheelchair will ever be President in Ghana.

“Unfortunately, the Flagstaff House, the highest office of the land in the construction of that mighty building has no ramp. Those who constructed it never thought for a second that one day the president of Ghana will be in a wheelchair. For those doubting Thomases who for a moment do not believe it is going to happen, let me tell them that they should be rest assured that the ways of man are not the ways of God,” Greenstreet stated with great positivity.”

Mr. Greenstreet noted that as a person who's physically challenged, he has a personal interest in policies that will make the lives of people like him better.

“We are all disabled in so many ways…let's re-orient our whole mind-set on disability. We will make sure the Disability Act; the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will be fully implemented with the speed of light. We shall go further to ensure that their education, health and transportation are free….And that public and private employers be legislated to employ not less than 5% of their workforce as persons with disability.”

CPP to raise US$300bn from almond tree cultivation – Greenstreet

Mr. Ivor Kobina Greenstreet announced the party's plan to make the commercial cultivation of the African tropical almond tree the backbone of the Ghanaian economy should his party win power come the November polls.

Mr. Greenstreet believes that the cultivation of the tropical almond tree, known as “abrofo nkatee” in the local Akan dialect, could earn the country as much as US$ 300 billion in revenue .

We won't beg for money like the NDC – Greenstreet

Mr. Greenstreet also took a jab at the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), who he said are running around begging for a fraction of what the country could generate from its natural resources.

“Why be shameful and disgraceful like the NDC, chasing the Chinese around in circles for US$ 3 billion when God has given is us fertile lands that with a little effort, we could aim to generate US$ 300 billion. Cut that target in half, even more than half and earning a US$100 billion alone will clear the country's debts.”

Ghana is in crisis
According to him, Ghana was in “crisis” due to the high unemployment rate worsened by poor policies of the incumbent NDC administration, saying efforts would be made by his party to tackle the situation.
