The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) says it is investigating a claim in which the Mayor, Kojo Bonsu is accused of extorting ₵25,000 each from some market women for store allocation in the ongoing Central Market project at Kejetia.

The Assembly has thrown an invitation to anyone who has any information about any payment to come forward and assist with the investigation.

A group of Assembly members accused the Kumasi Mayor and his aide of allocating some 20,000 stores at the ongoing Central Market project at Kejetia to some market women at the tune of ₵25,000 which contradicts the agreed fee of ₵15,000.

The information spread across the Municipality creating confusion amongst various trading groups who were affected by the evacuation and are expecting to benefit from the new market.

Some market women were furious at the news sensing a plot to disadvantage others from the ongoing project.

A claim which the KMA boss Kojo Bonsu has refuted, saying, it was engineered to tarnish his hard-won image in the Region.

“It’s total falsehood. Nothing of that has happened. It’s something that they are peddling around which is not true,” he said.

He explained there was no way he could allocate those stores when the Assembly has not reached the allocation stage.

“The Assembly has come out with a declaration that anybody who has paid ₵25,000 to any individual should come forward because the money is not going to be paid to people but rather paid at the banks,” he said.

“There is no hanky-panky in this business,” he said, adding, “the Assembly is investigating and we want the public to feel free to come to us and help with it.”
