Founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, says her husband’s unwavering ideals of probity and accountability is firmly rooted in her party.

According to the former First Lady, the NDP was formed in response to the failure of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to live up to the initial objectives for which it was formed.

She says her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, envisioned an NDC that would be truly participatory and committed to true democracy, however, that is not the case.

She said Mr Rawlings believed in a party whose leaders would lift Ghana from “the quagmire of poverty and into prosperity; reduce corruption, stealing and unnecessary corruption in the country.”

The NDP Presidential candidate for the 2016 general elections was speaking on current affairs programme, Pulse, on the Joy News channel on Multi TV, Monday.

She explained the formation of the NDP became necessary after the ruling party lost its ideals.

“The current NDC is a contradiction,” from what the ruling party set to achieve in the country, she said.

With barely five months to the general elections, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is hoping to become the first female President of Ghana and bring about key reforms.

Her Party was established in opposition to President John Mahama’s candidacy for the December 2012 presidential election and in reaction to overt and covert attempts to remove the dominance of the Rawlingses in the NDC.

She told host Francis Abban the NDP seeks to revive true multi-party and participatory democracy in Ghana.

“We are looking at restoring participatory democracy; we are looking at restoring probity and accountability. We are looking at ensuring that the people of Ghana look forward to something. I am moving on to make sure that [Jerry Rawlings’] principles are clearly spelt out in this party,” she said.

Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings was disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) prior to the 2012 elections, a situation she says was politically motivated.
