The Electoral Commission (EC) has discredited claims making the round that it cannot comply with the orders of the Supreme Court asking for a list of persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.

A post on the Commission’s official Facebook account says it has no difficulty meeting the demands of the apex court because it has the primary document from the various registration centers.

“It is a complete deception for anyone to claim that the EC cannot compile a credible list of voters who registered using the NHIS card as a form of identification,” the statement read.

Hearing a case of interpretation brought before it by a former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan in a case in which it ordered the EC to with immediate effect delete NHIS carders, ghost names and names of minors from the Electoral roll, the Supreme Court barked at the EC to furnish it with the list of NHIS carders.

The EC had initially read a different interpretation resulting in the anger of one of the plaintiffs, Ramadan who threatened to sue all the seven Commissioners for contempt.

A seven-member panel headed by the Chief Justice, Georgina Wood warned the EC to desist from acts that are likely to plunge the nation into chaos. It asked the Commission to furnish it with the list by Wednesday, June 29, 2016.

Many people have said the Commission will be unable to compile the list considering its recent behavior in the country.

But a post on its Facebook wall on Saturday, June 25 said: “It is false for anyone to claim that the EC cannot comply with the orders of the Supreme Court.”

“Wherein lies the difficulty when the EC has the primary document?” it asked adding “The Commission will fully satisfy the request of the Apex Court.”
