President John Dramani Mahama has commended the West African Examination Council (WAEC), for successfully organizing the 2016 Basic Education Certificate Examination with no leakages of its papers.

“I'm pleased also to note that WAEC has risen to the occasion to deal with the shameful examination malpractices that have plagued examinations over the past several years. This year, I am proud to note that our BECE examinations have passed with no incident recorded,” he said.

President Mahama made the commendation when he was speaking at the 70th anniversary ceremony of Aburi Girls Senior Girls on Saturday.

Widespread examination leakages in last year's BECE marred the exams and led to the cancellation of five papers .

However, WAEC assured of tight security in the exams this year.

It promised to fly the BECE question papers to the various regions while personnel from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) help them distribute the papers.

The Director General of the GES, Jacob Kor while addressing the press prior to the exams, said the move forms part of its measures to avert examination leaks.

He indicated that arrangements have been “concluded with the Ghana Police Service and the Bureau of National Investigations to help provide effective security and quality control monitoring mechanisms throughout the period of the examinations.”

“Right from the time the question papers are carried from the depot, there is going to be BNI personnel accompanying the questions,” Mr. Kor added.

Two 'rogues' arrested over 2015 BECE leaks
Two persons have been arrested   by the Police for using rogue websites to leak exam questions during the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

“The council decided to clamp down on these rogue websites and those people who operate such websites are in the hands of the Ghana Police service.”

He said “the most notorious ones are Mr. Luke Ditodito and another one called coffee linking who are together operating with 27,000 subscribers” adding that they “have been arrested by the Police in connection with last year's BECE examination,” the GES boss added.
