MTN Donates Computers, Accessories To Nsawam Prison

The Mobile Telecommunication giant, MTN Ghana has extended its benevolence to Nsawam Prison with computers and accessories to equip their ICT department in order to provide more ICT training to the inmates.

Mr. Ebenezer Asante, the CEO of MTN Ghana, said often times the Prison Service is one area that does not register the level of importance in our society.

According to him, in areas like this, they take the opportunity to courage the inmates and to engage the officers to let them know that the wider society is behind them.

He noted that MTN came not to only donate computers but to interact with the inmates and officers as part of efforts to climax their 21 day Y’ello care.

Mr. Asante noted that 21 days of Y’ello Care is an annual staff volunteer programme that runs across the MTN Group footprint from 1st to 21st June instituted 10 years ago to give back to society.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Asante noted that bedbugs has been another major challenge to the health of the inmates and therefore they have decided to present spraying machines, equipments and chemicals that will treat the bedbugs.

He added that they have also spent time with the inmates in the classrooms by way of instilling hope and confidence in them.

Mr. Asante emphasized that it is important to recognize that though people are here and are within the four walls of the prison but they have managed to add significant value to their life.

“I was surprised with the presentation of results that I was shown to and that out of five members of the six that they presented for the NVTI exams, they came out with flying colours,” he intimated.

He indicated that this donation is not going to be 9day wander because there are many things that will follow up once the officers of the prison present their proposal for support.

DPP Isaac Kofi Egyir, Officer In-Charge of Nsawam Medium Security Prison and Eastern Regional Commander expressed his profound gratitude to the management and staff of MTN for the kind gesture.

He said the donation will go a long way to augment the efforts in getting the inmates to add more value to their lives before they move of the prison.

According to him, MTN did fumigation in the morning before presenting the donation of the computers and equipments because of the frequent attacks of bedbugs.

He noted that one major challenge is inadequate supply of writing materials which MTN has agreed to offer more support in that regard.

According to him, the inmates are well versed in ICT with specialized training and skills in web designing, networking and others.

He appealed for more support by way of logistics to sharpen their ICT skills and improve upon their knowledge in the field.
