Busumuru Kofi Annan To Headline ‘Kronti Ne Akwamu’ Lecture

Ghana's only Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, H.E. Kofi Annan is billed to speak on “Credible and Peaceful Elections: A Prerequisite for Africa’s Progress” at this year’s ‘Kronti Ne Akwamu’ lecture, the flagship annual democracy and governance event of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana).

Coinciding with Ghana’s 7th Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the topic has been deliberately chosen to help deepen awareness among leading candidates in the upcoming elections, parties, election management body, the judiciary, the security apparatus, media, civil society and other key actors/players in Ghana’s democratic governance and development of the high stakes of the 2016 elections, and their respective obligations to ensure its success.

At a time when the advantages of democracy are being contested in various parts of the world, Mr. Kofi Annan, will reaffirm the importance of credible and peaceful elections for Africa’s peace and progress. Kofi Annan will also highlight some of the challenges to democratic practice and suggest how they can be addressed to ensure Africa’s and Ghana’s democracy continues to thrive in the XXIst century.

The 12th in the series, the ‘Kronti Ne Akwamu’ lecture features scholars and/or practitioners of exceptional international and local repute whose interests and work focus on the promotion of democracy, good governance and inclusive development and are designed to stimulate public debate and reflection on key aspects of Ghanaian democratic governance and development, and to facilitate appropriate reforms.
