Vendors of various newspapers published by the state-owned Graphic Communications Group, in the Ashanti Region, on Monday June 13, demonstrated against the company, for sub-contracting the distribution of its newspapers to a private firm, Kessben group of companies, in Kumasi.

Kessben group of companies manages a radio station, Kessben FM and other business in the Ashanti Region.

The vendors say they are unhappy with the new arrangement since it will affect sales.

Citi News’ Lauretta Timah reported that vendors who went to the depot to get newspapers for their daily activities, met an entirely different situation.

She reported that “on arrival at the depot, vendors explained that unlike other days where their names were attached to the newspapers they were supposed to receive, today Kessben was written on each of the newspaper they received.”

The vendors, according to Lauretta, say they will incur losses with the new arrangement because they will not be allowed by Kessben to return the unsold papers.

They have therefore refused to pick up newspapers for sale till their concerns are addressed.

According to the vendors, they are already struggling to makes ends meat following the dwindling patronage of newspapers.

The Graphic Communications Group, which has the largest market share of the newspaper business in Ghana, produces the Daily Graphic, Graphic Showbiz, The Mirror, Graphic Business and Junior Graphic.
