Accra, June 4, GNA - The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and selected schools in the Tema planted 1300 species of trees in the Micheal camp in Tema to mark World Environment Day.

The United Nations Environment Programme has set aside June 5, every year, to mark the World Environment Day.

The First Battalion of Infantry based at the Michel Camp was selected because of the congenial atmosphere devoid of altercation over land issues as experienced in the past and also to contribute to the greenly environment.

Mr John Pwamang, Deputy Director in charge of Operations at EPA briefing journalists, said his outfit has helped the military personnel to demarcate the land prior to the tree planting to prevent encroachers.

He said EPA would give three dustbins each to the five selected schools within the Tema Metropolitan Assembly to ensure proper sanitation as part of activities earmarked for the event on Sunday June 5.

Mr Pwamang said EPA over the past years planted trees to combat climate change as well as contribute to the mitigation of the effects.

It has also drawn the attention of stakeholders on the need to take action to combat the impact of climate change.

Mr Yahuza Gonda, Director of Science, Technology and Innovation at the Ministry urged all and sundry to plant more trees to replenish the old ones and take good care of the environment by avoiding unhealthy practices.

He said the Ministry has developed the National Climate Change Policy and the National Adaptation Strategy to reduce vulnerabilities and risks posed by climate change to the coastal communities and ecosystem.

He said with the support of government and the United Nations, the EPA has established a Cleaner Production Centre in Tema, in the Greater Accra Region, to assist industries in pollution reduction efforts, which would eventually reduce the national emission burden and contribute positively to the global effort of halving carbon-neutral society.
